Where Long Islanders Come For Straight Answers On Health Insurance

Finding the right health insurance can be a daunting task. Your family's health is at stake and so is your financial well being. A poor decision can cost you not just thousands of dollars, but it can also cost you expert care when you need it most.

This site was designed to provide you with answers to some of your questions about obtaining health insurance in New York. You may have questions which are not answered here. If so, please feel free to call or e-mail me.

Currently in New York, the best way to procure health insurance is through a business. If you are a business with 2-50 employees you will have your pick of all the major insurers. A plan can be designed specifically to meet your needs with varying co-pay's, prescription benefits, dental, etc.

Additionally, many people who think they are "one man shops" would be eligible for bona-fide group coverage. For instance, a two-shareholder corporation (even two spouses who are shareholders in the same corporation) would qualify for such a plan with many insurers. Some insurers will write a plan even when only one person in the group taking the insurance.

Many of our clients are self-employed (sole-proprietors). They often are independent contractors or small businesses that are not incorporated. In this case you are still able to obtain "Group Health Insurance" even though you are technically a group of one. A few insurance companies will offer you a group rate if you join a small business association. The fees for such an association are usually about $50 per year. You then have the choice of specific pre-set plans from each company. This is a good option when compared to your final alternative.

Your final alternative is to call each insurance company directly for an individual plan. Since the companies can not deny you coverage based on pre-existing conditions in New York, the rates for individual plans are exorbitantly high, in comparison to group rates. Brokers are not allowed to sell individual health policies in New York, so the burden falls on the consumer to research the plans available.

Regardless of whether you are self-employed or a small to large sized group, we are here to assist you. We can shop the market for the best priced plan to fit your needs. You don't need to worry about receiving varying prices from different brokers/agents. All the rates for health insurance are overseen by The State Insurance Department. The best thing you can do to ensure that you get the plan you want, is to work with a qualified insurance broker who will give you access to all your choices.
